Become a CPR Instructor

Turn your certification into a career, or a new revenue stream for your business. Here's exactly what it takes.

Why Become a CPR Instructor?

There are a couple of reasons why CPR Instructor training might be a good fit for you.

Corporate

An organization that requires several employees to be CPR certified may find it more cost-effective to have an employee who can perform the training in-house.

Individual

Looking for an opportunity to earn extra income? Many people like the flexibility and independent work of being a CPR Instructor.

Steps to Becoming an Instructor

1

You must have a current provider certification in the discipline you wish to teach. For AHA instructor courses, this must be a current AHA provider course in that same discipline.

2

Be aligned with a training site or center.

3

Complete the Instructor Essentials online portion.

4

Attend the instructor-led portion of the Instructor Essentials course. The official agenda takes at least 5-7 hours. Training centers may add content to the agenda, which can increase class time.

Written exam: At the end of class, candidates take a 25-question written exam covering everything learned during the online and in-person portions. An 84% or higher is required to pass.
5

Instructor candidates need to teach a class while being monitored by their instructor or another AHA Training Center Faculty member within 6 months of taking the instructor course. It's recommended to schedule monitoring as soon as possible so skills stay fresh.

During monitoring, candidates are graded using the AHA Instructor Monitor Tool form. After successful completion, candidates are issued a CPR Instructor certification within 20 days.
